Auditing and inspections are important parts of health and safety management and form distinct elements of the HSE Guide – Managing for health and safety (HSG65) and fall within the ‘Check’ area (Plan, Do, Check, Act).
Audit is an independent review and examination of records and activities to assess the adequacy of system controls, to ensure compliance with established policies and operational procedures and to recommend necessary changes in controls, policies, or procedures.
Active monitoring methods monitor the design, development, installation and operation of your health and safety management arrangements. These tend to be preventive in nature, for example: routine inspections and auditing.
GBS Health and Safety Services have qualified and experienced auditors who can visit your premises and audit against given standards and your health and safety management system.
The audit process generally includes a formal review of your health and safety documentation (risk assessments, policies, training records, maintenance schedules / records, etc) and a review of the site to compare the intent of the health and safety documentation against working standards.
An important part of the auditing process is the identification of strengths and weaknesses. Our reporting format praises areas where strengths were identified and crucially identifies and prioritises areas where there are weaknesses either within the documentation or with that of the physical arrangements.
We also undertake workplace inspections.
Inspections are similar to audits but tend to focus on a particular area, site or situation. A safety inspection looks at the physical conditions and work practices in a workplace.
We have experience in auditing in a vast variety of workplaces including (but not limited to):
|Educational establishments||Healthcare premises|
|Factories and warehouses||Student accommodation|
|Offices||Hotels and restaurants|
|Transportation facilities||Historic buildings|
|Estates and grounds||Farms and agricultural premises|
